facts about Leonardo da Vinci that make me want to learn more -

number A - All of his journals and notebooks were written backwards and from right to left so that in order to read them you need a mirror... thats just freaking cool. I know, I know that some people do that because of a medical problem where there brain reverses signals and what no but I still find it interesting.

2. He dissected over 30 human corpses in his life despite it being illegal. Now he didn't do this for medical reasons, they weren't autopsies. He just did it because he wanted to learn more about the human body and make his drawings more accurate. I know a lot of you are thinking that this just made him a big creepy freak who liked dead things but chances are you are very wrong due to reasons 3 and 4 (read below).

3. He was a vegetarian before people ever really thought about doing things like that, which I find inspiring.

4. He had an obsession with releasing caged birds. How lovely is that? super annoying, I imagine for people who owned the birds or were selling them at markets or what not, but still a very sweet act of kindness.

5. He was the first to discover that counting the rings on a tree could determine its age.

6. He explained why the sky was blue 300 years before molecular scattering was discovered. Now that is some super smart like stuff.

7. And lastly he was a super talented artist and inventor whose work is still loved and admired by many.

So obviously all these interesting facts add up to the reasoning that I NEED to get me a good da Vinci biography. If anyone has any recommendations let me know. x

OHMYGOSH! just got an email from the Patrick Wolf mailing list and it has this to say-

"The Return of Patrick Wolf

We can now announce that Patrick is getting ready to release his fifth album.

As yet without a title, we can tell you that you will be able to hear the first sounds from the album next week.

The first track to be taken from the album, 'Time Of My Life' will be getting its first play on Nick Grimshaw's Radio 1 show on Wednesday 3rd December.

Discussing the first single, Patrick says: "'Time Of My Life' is a song that I began writing at the end of a relationship in 2006 and then finished three years later during a temporary break up in my current relationship. The new album has a direct narrative about love and optimism surviving through adversity and recession. I wanted to celebrate the love and hope I have found in the last few years."

Released on December 6 'Time Of My Life' will be available on very limited edition 7" vinyl featuring a Leonard Cohen cover of 'Anthem' on the Bside."

TOP FIVE REASONS TO WATCH BIG LOVE

1. Polygamy. Clearly that means drama and lots of it.

2. Chloe Sevigny as Bill's second wife, Nicolette Grant. I love her. Don't know how else to say it. Yeah yeah I know she was quoted as saying the latest season of Big Love was "awful" but who cares. She's allowed an opinion. Besides maybe she was having an off day. We don't always love our jobs no matter how great they are. Besides look how cute she is! (left)

3. The theme song, God Only Knows by the Beach Boys. Gorgeous, gorgeous song. Fits the show perfectly.

4. Amanda Seyfried as Sarah Henrickson. She's so lovely. I adore pretty much any storyline that she's involved in.

5. This is your last chance to jump on the band wagon while the show's still in production as it's announced that the next season will be the last. sad.

If you don't love bowie then I don't love you

It seems to me that the more you learn about Bowie the less you really seem to know. Clearly one of the most mysterious figures in popular culture. Love him. Love his music. Love his lovely androgynous-ness.

For anyone who loves Bowie but for whatever reason hasn't seen Velvet Goldmine then go away because obviously you're daft. Jokes... but seriously it's a BRILLIANT film based loosely on the enigma that is glam rock Bowie and I feel that everyone should watch it. Even if you think Bowie's a bit rubbish (not that I can understand how that could be but anyhow...moving on).

I'm going to go listen to Space Oddity and have a bit of a cry. Only maybe without the cry.

THE SILENTS - THINGS TO LEARN

Some bands have the ability to grab your attention from the get go, seemingly with little to no effort. Perth based indie four piece, The Silents are one such band.

From the first time I heard their debut EP, Flicker and Flames, I was hooked. Their raw garage rock resonance teamed with their somewhat psychedelic sounding lyrics and 90’s indie pop tendencies made them difficult to ignore.

Almost two years later and The Silents are set to release their debut full length album, Things To Learn and I for one could not be more excited.

The album is a perfect example of everything The Silents are and offer. This strong collection of well written and produced songs is one of the best Australian debuts of its kind to be released in a long time.

Stand out tracks include previous EP released numbers, ‘Nightcrawl’ and ‘23’ and current single, ‘Little Girl Lost’ as well as ‘Ophelia’, ‘Generation Space’ and the title track, ‘Things To Learn’.

The Silents are a band well worth keeping an ear out for. In their short time together they’ve released two successful EP’s one amazing album and toured extensively including support slots alongside the likes of Maximo Park, The Vines, You Am I and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Where they’ll go next is anyone’s guess but there’s no denying wherever it is, it’ll be great. The Silents are Oz legends in the making and are quickly becoming one of my favourite bands to boot. So get out there and buy their album, Things To Learn (out March 29 through Ivy League Records). Chances are - You’re going to love it.

We Are Scientists - Brain Thrust Mastery

Having released an incredible debut LP with, With Love And Squalor it was always going to be a trial for We Are Scientists to come up with a follow up which could top it.

Since the release of their new album, Brain Thrust Mastery I’ve given up on the idea of them being able to “top it” and resigned myself to the fact that the once distinctive We Are Scientists ‘sound’ is no more.

It’s difficult to say what brought about this change in the two years between releases but the one obvious difference is the loss of drummer, Michael Tapper. The abrupt change in style could be due to his absence or his absence could have been because of the style change. At the moment it’s really just a matter for the chicken vs. egg court.

Despite any initial disappointments I may have felt upon hearing Brain Thrust Mastery I can’t seem to help but be drawn into it’s many charms and favours. Even without the addition of Tapper the boys from Brooklyn have a certain quirky appeal which set them apart from the others.

Remaining members Keith Murray and Chris Cain’s new found appreciation for the 80’s does not go unnoticed with many tracks having a distinctively Duran Duran-esque vibe. Including current single ‘After Hours’, which has managed to stake it’s claim as one of the albums highlights.

Other noteworthy tracks include the addictive opener, ‘Ghouls’ as well as ‘Lets See It’, ‘Impatience’, ‘Spoken For’ and ‘That’s What Counts’.

During an American tour last year Murray and Cain were seen to be taking the stage before each set, testing out their stand-up comedy routine. It’s antics like this which guarantee We Are Scientists remain one of the more interesting bands on the indie scene. Their wit and humour keeping them from fading into obscurity.

If you’re already a WAS fan then by all means check out Brain Thrust Mastery but be sure to keep an open mind. I promise you it won’t be what you expect.

Just found out (thanks to nme.com) that the amazing Carl Barat has finished recording his solo album!!!! There's no official release date yet but I could not be more excited!!!! YAY!

Apparently it's going to be quite different from anything he's done in the past. Less guitar, more piano. I can not wait to hear what he's come up with. I should go before I hyperventilate...

CAJUN DANCE PARTY - THE COLOURFUL LIFE

Every now and then a new band comes along who capture your imagination and heart in equal measure. Every time you hear them you get a little thrill and you just know you’re going to love whatever they do next.

At the moment that band for me is the ever lovely London based five piece, Cajun Dance Party. They released 2 singles last year both of which I feel head over heels for from the first listen. And now, finally, they’re releasing their debut album, The Colourful Life.

As most people are aware there is an unofficial rule that when you anticipate greatness there’s always a chance you’re going to be disappointed. Thankfully my blind trust in Cajun Dance Party to release an amazing debut was not in vain.

The standouts include previous singles, ‘The Next Untouchable’, ‘Amylase’ and ‘The Race’ as well as the ‘The Firework’, ‘Buttercup’ and the beautifully melancholy ‘Time Falls’.

The Colourful Life is everything I hoped it to be - vibrant, fun, memorable and inspired. All of which is made just that little bit more impressive by one simple fact. Cajun Dance Party is made up of a group of 18 year olds.

These truly talented teens give me more hope for the future of music then almost any other band on the scene today. Their fresh, optimistic and somewhat naïve approach to music is already leading them to amazing places.

Not only are they releasing their debut this month they also have plans to release their sophomore album later in the year after they’ve finished high school. Which is, if nothing else, inspiringly ambitious.

Cajun Dance Party are without a doubt a band to watch for. They’re already proving their worth and it’s still early days. These kids could go anywhere and chances are they will. So give The Colourful Life a listen. It’ll make a fantastic addition to any indie lovers music collection.

The Futureheads - This is Not the World

For a band who were considering calling it a day, The Futureheads are doing surprisingly well. The four piece, north-east UK rock-popsters have recently released their third full length album entitled, This Is Not The World.

The Futureheads hit the scene in 2004 in quite a big way with their debut self titled LP. Their immediate, catchy tunes and pop punk sensibilities ensured them an almost instantaneous dedicated fan following.

2006; however, saw many people with a strong sense of disillusionment at The Futureheads sound and direction. With their Sophomore album, News and Tributes being far more polished and mainstream then their original efforts.

Two years later the boys seem to have both returned to their roots and taken a few giant steps forward. This Is Not The World is everything you could possibly want from a Futureheads release.

The album takes no time at all to fall in love with. It’s simple and memorable formula is what good pop music is all about. From first listen you’ll be humming the opening track (and coincidentally, the first single), ‘The Beginning Of The Twist’.

Other undeniably stand out tracks include ‘Think Tonight’, ‘Hard To Bear’, ‘Work Is Never Done’, ‘Everything’s Changing Today’ and the current single, ‘Radio Heart’ which I has been stuck in my head for what seems like days now.

Don’t get me wrong, This Is Not The World is nowhere near one of the best albums I’ve heard of late. I can’t imagine it becoming a future ‘classic’ release, far from it but it’s without a doubt fun and likeable. The kind of album which lifts your spirits and increases the urge to embarrass yourself on the dance floor (either literally or figuratively).

If you’ve yet to hear this album then I strongly recommend getting down to your local record store and grabbing yourself a copy. Your CD player will thank you for it.

Today I brought these AMAZING ecotools makeup brushes and I could not be more pleased with them. They are bamboo handles with recycled aluminium and synthetic bristles. Perfect. They are SO soft and lovely plus they're cruelty free. I would recommend these to anyone. In fact I'm already planning on purchasing more.

EUGENE McCGUINNESS - THE EARLY LEARNINGS OF

2008 has been an amazing year for new music so far, with a myriad of bands bringing out near jaw-droopingly good debut releases. From Cajun Dance Party to The Silents to Vampire Weekend I’ve just been continually surprised and delighted.

Another fantastic debut which has just come to my attention is actually a mini album of 8 tracks by an incredible young songwriter by the name of Eugene McGuinness. The album is entitled The Early Learning’s of Eugene McGuinness and is one of the rawest most satisfyingly beautiful collection of songs I’ve heard in a long while.

I hadn’t heard a bar of McGuinness’ work before listening to the record but I was instantly taken with his quirky, addictive and melodic sound. This twenty-something lad from Liverpool has undoubtedly become an instant favourite of mine. Especially with tracks such as the catchy opener ‘High Score’ as well as his first single ‘Monsters Under The Bed’.

Other tracks of note include, ‘Bold Street’, ‘A Child Lost In Tesco’ and ‘A Girl Whom My Eyes Shine For But My Shoes Run From’.

But when it comes down to it I can’t seem to gush enough about the merits of this recording as a whole. The Early Learning’s Of is such a beautiful collection of tracks. McGuinness has a gift for stringing a song together that very few seem to possess.

The Early Learning’s Of is only the beginning though. A first effort. The knowledge of that alone leaves me in a state of frenzied anticipation for what’s to come. If my instincts are working at all then it’s only going to get better from here on in.

Apparently a full length release has just finished being recorded and has a tentative release date of October this year. I for one am dying to hear it. If you’re looking for a new exciting musical obsession then give Eugene McGuinness a listen and get in on the ground floor of what’s bound to be a highly crowded bandwagon.

I very nearly had a heart attack yesterday when I found out that American cosmetics company Urban Decay had teamed up with Disney to create an Alice in Wonderland eyeshadow pallet. It is GORGEOUS!

I know some of you are probably wondering how I didn't know about this sooner but you have to remember that I'm an Australian girl. We don't have Urban Decay over here and much to my dismay the official website doesn't ship internationally. Such a shame. The Urban Decay website is actually sold out of the Alice pallet at them moment anyway. I've already looked it up on ebay and I'm thinking of getting one but they all seem to be about $200-$300 which I really can't afford. It's actually quite ridiculous really considering it was only $52 USD's to begin with...

But I'm going to think it over some more and continue researching because I desperately want this beautiful piece of marvelry. It's just too too wonderful.

THE VINES - MELODIA

The Vines were one of the biggest buzz bands on the planet in 2002 with the release of their phenomenal debut album, Highly Evolved. It seemed there wasn't a teenager in the country who couldn't sing you the chorus of their hit single, ‘Get Free’.

Its been six years, three studio albums, several line-up changes, one medical diagnosis and countless mind altering performances but The Vines are one band that have proved the buzz doesn't always have to be short lived.

Despite any difficulties and negativity the band have suffered over the years, frontman Craig Nicholls is still one of the coolest people in rock for one simple reason. He has the ability to write an 'album'. Some people may see this as a weakness and in some cases it may be. After all what's the point in being able to create 40 plus minutes of aurally pleasing psychosis if the songs don't work as well individually?

Personally that's what I find most appealing about The Vines back catalogue. There's just something incredible about a band who can only really be appreciated in full.

The newest album, Melodia is no exception. As always I became highly skeptical about this release after hearing the first single to be lifted from the album, 'He's a Rocker'. The song just didn't grab me but when it's included within the context of the album as a whole I can't help but like it.

While I still maintain the album should be judged as a whole, If I had to choose stand out tracks then I couldn't go past the brilliant opener 'Get Out' as well as 'Autumn Shade III', 'Orange Amber', 'True as The Night' ' Scream' and 'She Is Gone'.

If you're already a Vines convert then you won't have any issues with new album but if you're new to their sound then Melodia might not be the best place to start but by all means give it a go.

I just stumbled across some of my old album reviews I've written over the past few years and it made me nostalgic so I thought I'd start posting them here occasionally. I'm only going to post the ones of albums that I adore so if you haven't heard any of these then be sure to check them out. I promise it will be worth the effort.

This review is from October 2008. enjoy.

TOM COONEY - PRESQUE VU

Atmospheric, innovative and emotional. Brisbane based, Tom Cooney’s uniquely addictive tunes live and breathe at the heart of all these things.

This young and accomplished folk artist is fast becoming the one to watch in the Oz music scene. After quitting his job and focusing solely on his music career two years ago Cooney has achieved an extraordinary amount. The release of a mini album Hold Me Down, live performances including appearances at Homebake and Splendour in the grass as well as supports slots with the likes of Fionn Regan and M. Ward and the continuing reinvention of self made record label, El Nino El Nino which he shares with two of his closest friends.

But the most substantial and exciting accomplishment is the final release of his debut full length album, Presque Vu. The results of which are near hauntingly beautiful collection of songs which leave the listener certain in the knowledge that by merely listening to these tracks they are becoming part of something bother larger and contradicting more intimate then themselves.

The album is full of honest simplicity. The calmingly serene melodies take hold from the first instance, their appeal frightingly fierce.

The stand out tracks include ‘Mountains In The Sky’, Giulia’, ‘Beneath The Wheel’, ‘The Rivers The Same’ and the memorably spare closer ‘Silence’.

Tom Cooney’s acoustic genius would no doubt appeal to fans of artists such as Fionn Regan, Sondre Lerche, I Am Kloot and Ryan Adams. Presque Vu is an album the likes of which have not necessarily been missing from the Australian scene of late but are definitely leaning towards the rare side. Cooney has managed to debut with a record that not only manages to showcase his abilities as a songwriter in a smart and accessible way but also cements him as someone to watch for. This is only the beginning of what’s sure to be an incredible journey and I for one am looking forward to tagging along for the ride.

My boyfriend and I just finished watching the complete series of Bottom. I have never simultaneously laughed and cringed so much in my entire life. I don't know how it's possible I haven't seen this before.

For those of you who don't know what it is, it's another British sitcom from Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson. I've loved The Young Ones (which they also star in) for some years now but somehow Bottom had seemed to escape my attention.

Thankfully that has now been rectified. Now all that needs to be done is to find a copy of the Bottom movie, Guest House Paradiso... Wish me luck!

Recently I stumbled across a fantastic product. Vintage Sister lip balm.

I know lip balm doesn't seem all that exciting but this balms are uniquely lovely. They come in adorable little tins with a different cute design on each one plus they're extremely moisturizing but the thing I really LOVE about them is the limited edition seasonal flavors.

Sometime last year I brought I book with a gloriously inviting cover. A book that promised adventure.

Sometime this year I actually read it. The book is entitled, C'est La Folie and it is more then I expected.

Michael Wright was a London based theater critic. He spent his weekends flying his vintage plane and playing tennis in between bouts of talking to his cat but something wasn't right. He wasn't where he was meant to be.

So in what might be described as a whim, off he went. To rural France.

C'est La Folie follows the events that took place in Michaels first few years in his new existence and I have rarely been more captivated.

Michael's attempts to integrate himself with not only rural life but rural life in a foreign country are charming. His often problem fraught renovations to his rustic farmhouse and his acquisition of various farm animals make for both heart-wrenching and laugh out loud moments.

C'est La Folie is joyous and personable in a way that makes me happy to be alive.

The next volume of Michael's journey is due out July 2010. Can't wait!

I've been on a bit of a makeup kick of late. Doing a lot of looking around and seeing what become available since last I looked and one thing that I have to say I'm actually quite appalled with these lip glosses...

They're from purple lab and they're lip plumpers which I don't overly agree with in the first place. If for some reason you don't know what lip plumpers are then they pretty much do what they say. The have active ingredients which give your lips that bee stung look. Which I guess is good for those of us out there with incredibly thin lips but for the most part it seems unnatural and maybe just a little bit damaging to me.

But the thing that I'm really disgusted with about these lip products is they have included an appetite suppressant right in the gloss. Honestly what the hell do they think they're playing at? I completely disagree with weight loss fads and gimmicks. If you want to loose weight eat less fried foods and go for a god damn walk.

This product is wrong in my opinion but I'd be happy to listen to other peoples perspectives.

So I'm two days late but I thought we'd better mark Grace Kelly's 80th birthday! The woman who embodies class and elegance on the silver screen turned the big eight zero on the 12th of November 1929 so I thought what better way to celebrate than with a little bio a few photos and some you tubing :D

Born into a VERY wealthy family in Philadelphia, Kelly began life as a socialite and quickly moved onto modeling as a teenager before being discovered as an acting talent and at 22 and was cast in a small part in the movie 'Fourteen Hours' but it was her role in Alfred Hitchcock's 'Dial M for Murder that really caught peoples attention and put her on the path to one of the most prominent legends of the silver screen.

Although I love her work with Cary Grant I have to say my favorite movie of Grace Kelly's is her last one, High Society with Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra *sigh* I LOVE that movie! Anyway after this she became engaged to and later married Prince Rainier of Monaco, collecting the title for herself of her serene highness Princess of Monaco or as she was commonly know, Princess Grace. Its a tragedy that Grace Kelly's life was cut short after a car accident at the age of 51 but her poise, beauty and grace live on in her films which I would highly recommend! So i'm off now to watch 'High Society' and wish Princess Grace a very Happy 80th Birthday...belated :D

Though your heart is aching..even though its breaking" I love this, so beautifully tragic, for me it always feels like the performer is talking to themselves not just a friend. As if they're trying to convince themselves of something that they maybe don't quite believe, (except the Michael Buble version which I suggest you steer clear form). I mean if I was going to try and cheer someone else up this wouldn't be the song i'd play, i'd probably go for something like Mental as Anythings 'Live it up' lol.

Smile is one of my favorite songs, I was downloading different versions this morning, all wonderful and I came across this one of the incomparable Judy Garland and it was the only version that actually made me cry and in so became my favorite version of this...lovely but oh so beautifully tragic masterpiece.

Cary Grant was the original leading man. His charisma, charm, good looks and unquenchable talent made him unique. Not only that but lovable and idealistic.

He's a man's man and a ladies man in equal measure. He was a scene stealer if ever there was one. He is the embodiment of the silver screen.

Don't get me wrong he went on to make many a colour film but it's the classic black and white films that make me love him. In fact I think I've only seen two of his films in colour and while his acting is still remarkable they don't really do much for his appearance. I was going to try and be tactful but I don't really think I can.

In black and white, Cary Grant is debonair. He is gut churningly handsome but in colour... well, he looks a little like an old handbag. Thats right, he looks leather. It's really not too desirable but also having said that one of his greatest (and most heartbreaking) films is in colour. An Affair to Remember. I've only seen it the once but it nearly killed me.

My dearest friend and I rented it one day last year for the sole reason that we hadn't seen it. All up I'd say we cried for a good hour and a half. Such a draining film. I told myself (and others) that I'd never watch it again but these days I'm not so sure. It had to have been good to inspired such a dramatic response.

The main reason I'm writing this blog though is to recommend two particular films, both of which co-star the lovely Katherine Hepburn. The first is called Holiday and the second is The Philadelphia Story. Both are glorious.

The latter was based on a hit Broadway play at the time and was then later adapted into a much loved musical of mine starring, Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly, entitled High Society. Deliciously enchanting is the only way I can think to describe such films. Everyone should get the chance to see them. They are magic and should be loved.

I sent a picture of a cute puppy to my boyfriend. He received the picture but it didn't say it came from my phone. He assumed it was me anyway and replied, then called me making sure I sent it and asking whose phone I used. Confused I said that I used my own. While we were talking he got a text from the same number he replied to asking who he was and why he was talking about sleepy puppies...

So strange... Damn phones! How do these things happen!!??

colour craze

All this year the colour that has really stood out to me has been purple. Every time I see a shade, whether it be violet, lavender or plum, I can't help but take note. These lovely hues have been popping up all over the place and I for one am glad of it.

In honor of this gloriously girly colour I scoured Modcloth for some of my favorite purple finds. Although, I don't recommend wearing them all at the same time.

I was reading Harper's Bazaar yesterday and was trying to remember how long this prestigious magazine had been in print. My guess was since about the 1920's.

I could not have been more wrong... Harper's Bazaar was first published in 1867 and the first cover looked a little something like this >>

They've come a long way since then. I decided to look up some of their former cover arts and I must say that 'art' is definitely the right way to describe it. Some of the covers are simply beautifully and would look lovely mounted on just about any wall.

I'm sure the magazine has gone through many changes over the years but the one that stands out to me the most (and somewhat puzzles me) would have to be the change in spellings. Why is it that they use to spell Bazaar with only one 'a' and what made them feel the need to add an extra one?

As far as fashion magazines go it's pretty much this (and British Vogue when the mood strikes me). The Bazaar is the perfect magazine to sit back, a cup of caffeine in hand and relax with. Plus I have to admit that I have a thing for the historic at the moment (as proved by my previous Max Factor blog).

I can't imagine many newer magazines these days sticking it out for the long haul the way Harper's has done (except maybe Australia's very own Frankie mag...but that might just be wishful thinking).

Miss Stella McCartney's most recent fashion campaign is starring non other then our lovely friends from the forest, Bambi, Thumper and Flower.

Apparently the idea from which stemmed from her love of animals and her beliefs regarding their welfare (as well as her love for the Disney classic itself).

Her current season's designs are glamorous and liberating, animalistic in feel and freeing in nature.

The images, shot by Ryan McGinley, were taken in the woods of Worcestershire, England, the perfect backdrop for Bambi and co to drop by for a round of whose cutest. The animals or the clothes?

I personally love this ad campaign. So many fashion campaigns are harsh and disturbing, making me forget what it is their trying to sell in the first place.

Unlike this which is sweet and transporting making me first notice the images of all of our childhoods but then directly take stock of the gorgeous garments also featured. Fantastic effect. Original and classic all at the same time.

Most of us out there have heard of the makeup brand, Max Factor, "the makeup of makeup artists" blah, blah, blah but how many of us actually realised just how awesomely historic this brand is?

Max Factor was the makeup classic Hollywood stars swore by. Marilyn Munroe used nothing but and the forever lovely Judy Garland lent her image to their advertisements.

Max Factor is said to have coined the term, Make-up. I mean, come on! That's pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

Know what else Max is attributed with?

The invention of both lip gloss and water proof mascara! Why, those are practically the best friends of every makeup toting girl out there!

Why didn't we know these things!? it seems wrong somehow.

Max Factor has slowly been losing popularity since the beginning of the millennium, according to sales figures.

I for one am sad to see this happen. I plan to stick by Max Factor now that I know the truth. I've already checked out their website and am currently planning my next makeup purchase.

I've been quite the Patrick Wolf fan for some years now. I jumped on the bandwagon a bit before the Magic Position days, so I still had a bit of history to catch up on.

I honestly can't think of another young musician who inspires such change and diversity of image and style.

Wolf's career is such that you can almost see him evolve musically from child into man.

The lovely Patrick's physical image is as ever changing as his music, altering from album to album.

When Patty first hit the scene he looked a little something like this >>

He was a sweet faced innocent with pale blonde locks and a violin. though, once you listened to the sometimes sinister often disturbing lyrics of his debut album, Lycanthropy, it became apparent that this boy was only innocent in looks. To be truthful, I wouldn't of had it any other way.

After a short break the boy wonder hit us hard with possibly my favourite of his albums, Wind in the Wires. This time Wolf was sporting dark locks which more than suited the dark and haunting themes of his sophomore release. If you haven't heard the track Tristan then I don't think we can be friends...

When it came time for the release of the third studio album Patrick had changed form yet again, all-be it somewhat more dramatically. The Magic Position was and is Wolf's most optimistic and altogether pop album to date. To show this, his hair once again went under the dye. This time it was a bright glorious red. >>

And when it comes to this years release, The Bachelor, things seem to have come full circle, the blonde has reappeared. The darkness has reappeared but he is by no means repeating himself. The constant changes more then ensure that his music and he himself never appear stale or repetitious.

Patrick Wolf is a true original. Something more than a little hard to find these days. His music is infectious, smart and affecting. Everything that he is and everything that he does is worth it's weight in gold. At least in my over stated slightly dramatic opinion. Mr. Wolf is a legend in the making and I for one am glad I'm strapped in for the ride.

Louisa May Allcott's, Little Women. The classic coming of age story about 4 sisters (cliche, cliche, cliche).

Personally, I adore it. It's been one of my favourite books for simply years. I adore the sweetness of it. I adore the virtue. I adore the sheer goodness of all the characters. No one can possibly in this day and age be quite as good as these young girls. Not even the most religious of us.

Every single time I read this epic young adult novel (actually novels since it was originally publishing in 2 volumes...) I fall in love with Laurie, I mourn for dear Beth, I curse Amy and I root for Jo.

This fine book has everything you could possibly want from such an adventure. Friendship, unrequited love, requited love, heart, soul and laughter.

Theodore Laurence is up there with my favourite literary characters of all time. He comes to life on the page and in my mind with such clarity that I can't help feeling as if I know him. Actually I can't help feeling as if I know them all. The book is so familiar it's like an old friend. It's like coming home.

Usually with books I adore the movie adaptations make my head ache with the badness of it all but I have seen two versions of Little Women and they're not at all bad.

The oldest of the two is 1933, Katherine Hepburn film and while I adore Miss Hepburn and she plays Jo beautifully it's still lacking somewhat.

The 1994 Winona Ryder version is excellent. Each actor embodies their character with such devotion and ease that it is actually as if the novel itself has come to life. Clare Danes breaks my heart as Beth as does Christian Bale as Laurie.

I whole heatedly recommend this film to anyone yet to see it but even more so I recommend the novel. It is love and therefore worth every ounce of time and effort.

My latest fun find on etsy.com is a cute handmade necklace with a picture of a boom box on it but the thing that really drew me to it, making me instantly add it to my ever growing wish-list is the fact that the design is mounted on a scrabble tile. To me, thats just too cute an idea.

And while I know it shouldn't be a selling point I can't help but love the sweet packaging design... Tell me i'm not crazy...

Ridiculously excited round about now!

Was just on the Spoon website and as it turns out they put up a free download a few weeks ago and I didn't know about it.

But that's all rectified now. The track is an a Capella version of The Ghost of You Lingers. Such a gorgeous song in general and this version is simply incredible.

Spoon would have to be one of my all time favourite bands. Britt Daniels can do no wrong.

If you for some reason haven't heard of Spoon then I don't know whats wrong with you...Get out there and give them a listen. You can hear their stuff on myspace, their official website (www.spoontheband.com), lastfm and numerous other places I'm sure.

I plan on spending the day lapping up the goodness that is Spoon and if you have any sense, you will to.

I plan on being a well worn traveller in my life and in order to do that I'm going to need (obviously I mean 'need' in a loose sense) some fabulous luggage.

If for some reason you haven't yet heard of etsy, I more then recommend it. It's basically a global network for buying and selling handmade and vintage items. There is an endless supply of awesome stuff. Do check it out.

anyway. The seller with the lovely luggage is GetReadySetGo and their stuff is simply beautiful. I drool every time I look at their page. The only problem is the larger items aren't currently being shipped to Australia. So I suppose I'll have to search on.

I can't deny it. I have quite the thing for canvas bags. They're adorable and oh so customisable. The one i'm currently lusting over can be found on the sweet little site, supermarkethq.com, yet another place I could spend an obscene amount of $$$ if I only I had them.

There is just something so cute about having something be part of what it's not. And canvas bags aren't expensive, fancy or vintage but non the less this is the design printed on this most darling of bags.
I can most definitely see myself traipsing about the place, this bag slung over my shoulder filled with all the things I can't bring myself to leave home without. But for now I'll just look at it's picture and make do with the more then ample supply of canvas bags already in my possession.

lets all meet up in the year 2000

A while ago I came across Pulp's seminal 1995 album, Different Class in limited edition form. I of course was obliged to buy it straight away since in my clear insanity I didn't actually already own the album in any capacity.

Pulp are one of those bands so easy to love but so easy to over look. But over look them I will no longer do. Jarvis Cocker, quite frankly, rocks my socks. Pulp were (and are) amazing but it's his solo works that really get under my skin.

In fact Angela is probably one of my favourite singles of the year. Besides, if there were ever a time to become smitten with Mr Cocker now would be it. It seems that this most incredible of men is involved in just about every kind of project you can think of right now. He's everywhere. And I intend to enjoy it while it lasts!

The only thing I won't be able to enjoy/take advantage of is his trip to Australia as in my broke state I can not afford the simple joy a ticket to one of his gigs would bring. Alas I will just have to surfice with the Jarvis in my head. Not that I mind. He's pretty fabulous.

obsession and courage

There are many things I love. Two of which are cooking and writing, so when I first heard about Julie & Julia I was thrilled.

If you are for whatever reason out of the loop on the Julie & Julia project then let me fill you in. Back in 2002 Texan come New Yorker, Julie Powell was somewhat drifting through life. Almost 30 and still working as a temp.

But everything changed when her husband Eric suggested she start a blog. And so she did. A blog and a challenge began. Julie would spend exactly one year making all 524 recipes in Julia Child's prolific book, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and in turn would blog about her experiences.

Her courage, determination and just plain craziness won over people all over the place. The next thing Julie knew she had a book deal.

The book was, not surprisingly, a best seller. A best seller which recently got made into an incredible film by Nora Ephron starring Amy Adams as Julie and Meryl Streep as Julia.

Now I've both read the book and seen the film. And while I feel somewhat odd admitting it, I much preferred the film.

Meryl and Amy are both superb. They are both endearing and lovely in a way I don't think the real Julie and Julia could ever have been.

Julie & Julia is up so high on my favorite film list I can barely reach it. So inspiring and funny and heartwarmingly beautiful I'm not sure I stopped grinning the entire time.

This I can not say for the book. Obviously the book is the truth. It's life the way it really happens and while I loved that and thought it was extremely accomplished writing, especially for a first novel, I just didn't fall in love with the project the way I did in the film.

Both are well worth your time and I'd recommend them to just about anyone who would listen. So having said that. Go. Watch. Read. Be.

Why is it that pointless things fascinate me so god dammed much!? It's okay. I'm not expecting you to answer. I fear there is no answer that would satisfy me without insulting me in the process.

Anyway. On to the point of this rant, which is - These adorable usb owls. As far as I can tell they do literally nothing at all except look incredibly cute.

Basically you plug one of these little guys into your usb drive and then perch him on your monitor where he will proceed to blink, move his head and be nothing short of lovely. I don't think you can even save data on him but I could be wrong.

I can't really explain why this appeals to me but it really does. If you, like me, would just love a little owl friend to keep you company and if you, unlike me, can actually afford to be ordering frivolous things off of the internet then head on over to thinkgeek.com where I found the little darlings.

Also, just curious, but if you had one - what would you name him?

This is a book I've been meaning to read for quite awhile now; however, I'm predisposed to dislike any book in the 'recommended reading' section of book stores maybe its the indie elitist portion of my personality that made me put off buying it in favor of lesser known titles and now I have a bad feeling I'm going to become one of the people I despise, the "I just saw this great movie so now I'll read the book" people...so maybe I better go get a copy before the only copies you can buy are the movie poster cover ones :P

This trailer looks amazing and I can't wait for November so I can see the whole thing and best of all I don't hate either of the lead actors :D Take a look and let me know what you think!

I've found yet another something that I can't have. This time it's not only that I can't afford it but it's that it's out of stock.

The thing i'm currently lusting over is this beautiful jacket from dorothyperkins.com (and yes they ship to Australia, not that I can afford it).

There are several different colours in this style but this is the one that took my fancy the most.

So lovely, isn't it? or isn't it?

I don't know why I torture myself by looking at these sites but I just can't seem to help myself.

Out of all the films ever made, The Wizard of Oz has to be one of the most beloved of all time.

The 1939 film starring the legendary Judy Garland is motion picture history at it's finest. These were the days when most films were still made in black and white. The days when the silver screen still had potential to lift us up and bring us together.

Cinema was an event. Everyone went. Everyone saw practically everything. Films ran for months and months at a time. This was the golden age.

Not to say that everything was all roses and sunshine. The film industry was possibly more seedy and debauched in those days then even now but the quality was simply divine. To put it simply, it had heart. Even now watching films from that era is just a joyous experience.

And one film from that era that more people have seen then any other is The Wizard of Oz. Based on L. Frank Baum's classic children's story, The Wonder Wizard of Oz, the story follows young Dorothy Gale of Kansas as she adventures over the rainbow and into the land of Oz.

There is something so magical, so purely beautiful about this film. Generations have loved it and with good reason. If by some unlucky twist of fate you, dear reader, have not seen this so very worthwhile of films then, honestly, what are you waiting for, get out there! Befriend Dorothy. Laugh at The Cowardly Lion. Pity The Tin Man. Fear The Wicked Witch of the West and fall in love with Scarecrow like countless others before you have done. You will be better for it, this I know.

DIY trend

I just squealed with excitement. I can't remember the last time I did that but personally I think I did it with good reason. I just found the cutest DIY project. One which I'm hoping my lovely boyfriend will help me with... Must remember to ask later. Anyway.

The project is non other then a bedside table but with a very important and oh so clever twist. It's made of old second hand books!

(pic right) isn't it just charming!?! this idea is so magnificent I can't wait to try it. and it's a perfect time for it really since we're moving house soon and we're going to need all the furniture we can get.

I am hideously broke at the moment. But if I wasn't here's what I would buy...

This oh so sweet bicycle necklace/watch! I'm truly very in love with it. Which is somewhat ironic considering I never learnt how to ride a bike and I sort of doubt I ever will...but that's not the point. The point is the pretty! and it has bucket loads of it.

I found this at www.modcloth.com. An evil place where I am constantly and consistently tempted to spend any and all money I come by.

But in all honesty it is quite a nice place to browse if you have a moment. But do be warned of its addictive qualities...

I'm currently reading the gorgeous 1930 novel, Vile Bodies by the old genius of a boy, Evelyn Waugh.

I feel it's not too soon to admit to this already being one of my favorite books of all time. Just lovely in every way.

I'd already seen the hilarious 2003 film adaptation by my hero, Stephen Fry but I actually think I like the book even more.

So rich with wit and humor. so full of characters that one would love to share a bottle (or 40) of fizz with.

My perfect little paperback edition of this novel literally fills me with joy every time I glance it's way.

When this book was written I imagine it was non to popular with the well behaved masses.

This charming volume is filled with every kind of debauchery you could partake of during the 20's, 30's and 40's.

- Drugs, alcohol, sex. Not to mention females wearing trousers! Simply too too shy-making.

Vile Bodies is the kind of novel that at once consumes you. Takes over all but your simplest of faculties. I want to be Agatha Runcible. I want to be friends with Adam Fenwick-Symes. I want to have adventures with Miles Malpractice. I want to be one of the Bright Young People who so corrupt 'modern' society.

Everything about this story is decadence, and in being so makes the perfect escapist volume I've ever had the joy of coming across. I'd recommend this to just about any literary creature out there. Do not, please, be put off by the fact that it was written way back when. I promise it's as fresh today as it ever was. Maybe even more so in our days of corruption(oh my!).

Also... I'd just like to quickly leave off with the fact that I'd quite adore an original 1930 edition (right). Does not have to be a first edition. I just adore the cover art. If anyone finds one I'd be happy to hear about it...
